Why the name The Archer? (in German, “Der Bogenschütze”)

On the 5th of April, 1994, a few athletic guys met up on the new-city side of the Elbe, near the Albert Bridge to chat, laugh, eat, and drink.

Many ideas were pondered, but one thing took a definite shape: creating a sports organization for gays and lesbians in Dresden.  As they considered what the name of such an organization would be, it became immediately clear.  For there, just a stone’s throw away, in the direction of the old city, stood the athletic, naked, iconic man of our city, cast in bronze for all to see:

“The Archer” (“Der Bogenschütze”)

So it was that the organization’s name quickly  came to be and entered later that year into the official register as No. 2373.
